Paint can be defined as a fluid material which, when spread over a surface in a thin layer, will form a solid, cohesive, and adherent film. The term paint describes a variety of materials including enamels, undercoats, varnishes, and lacquers. Paints and other surface coatings confer two main properties on a structure - protection and decoration. More recently, other functions have been developed, such as improving insulation by 'cool paints.' Over the years, the use of conventional solvent-based paints has come under increasing environmental pressure. More recently, the toxicity of these solvents to humans has also become an area of concern. Conventional paints use ethylene glycol as the solvent. Ethylene glycol may be acutely toxic following ingestion. Ethylene glycol chemically breaks into toxic compounds in the human body, and its toxic byproducts are capable of affecting the central nervous system (CNS), heart, and kidneys. Ingestion of huge amounts of ethylene glycol can be fatal. Awareness of risks that could harm humans, environment, and the ecosystem have driven the global coatings industry to develop a water-borne technology for application in low-VOC paint systems.
