ENVIRONMENT-FRIENDLY COATINGS FOR WOODEN FLOORS AND FURNITURE

The application of coating solutions on wooden floors and furniture is very important. These coating solutions protect the wooden floors and furniture from degrading and prolong their life. Polyurethane coatings are typically used in wood coatings for wooden floors and furniture. Many polyurethane dispersions contain N-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP), as it is often a required part of the production process. It also facilitates film formation. California Proposition 65 and European legislations require special labelling for products containing NMP. For example, in Europe, due to the hazard reclassification of NMP, products containing 5% or more NMP will have to be labelled as being irritant and toxic "T". Due to increased environmental impact of NMP containing coatings, a market need for NMP-free polyurethane coatings is present. Coating manufacturers across the globe are conducting research to meet this growing market need.
