The earthquakes, even on a minor scale, can cause great/damage to masonry buildings in the earthquake prone areas. The degree of destruction depends highly on the duration of destructive energy from below the ground of the structure than on the severity in the Richter scale. Geosynthetic materials placed under the foundation of the building can absorb this seismic energy and transmit some of them to an overlying structure to mitigate the hazards of the earthquake to civil engineering structures. Researchers across the globe have been exploring the suitability of the various materials for the purpose of isolating the building foundation.
