摘要

For a long time, HIV has constituted a contraindication for deep brain stimulation (DBS) due to the higher risk of infections and to the neurotropism of the virus itself. The virus infects macrophages and microglia [2] in the central nervous system, and frequently causes neurocognitive impairment. The prevalence of Parkinson's disease (PD) among HIV positive patients is approximately 0.5 % [1, 4], and thus, a large number of patients have both HIV and PD, taking into account the dissemination of the virus. The first prostheses in HIV-positive patients have been used in orthopedic and dental surgery. Only recently, in 2009 and 2011, respectively, two cases of deep brain stimulation in HIV patients have been repotted [3, 5] Here, we describe the case of an HIV-positive patient who underwent subthalamic nucleus DBS in 2008 at our institute.
