Oral Health Problems: A Neglected Issue in Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease

According to the data from the 2015 United States Renal Data System (USRDS), Taiwan has the highest incidence and prevalence of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) among all the surveyed countries within the past 10 years (1). Complications from chronic kidney disease (CKD) are also among the top 10 leading causes of death in Taiwan (2). These phenomena partially stem from the fact that CKD is closely linked with comorbidities such as diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, dys-lipidemia, and metabolic syndromes; they contribute significantly to subsequent morbidity, mortality, and healthcare expenditures (3-9).
