Aqueous coatings contain volatile organic compounds (VOC) such as ethylene and propylene glycol to improve drying characteristics, However, due to the restrictions in the allowable VOC content, the amount of these alkylene glycols must be limited. This affects the time period over which a freshly applied coating can be repaired without resulting in brush marks, and the time period over which another coating can be applied over it without leaving any lap marks. While high-molecular weight binders may be non-volatile, the probability of being retained in a dried film is high due to their inherent hydrophilicity, thereby leading to very short open and wet time periods.
