A helmet capable of resisting the impacts of rifle bullets and high-energy fragments has been developed by Honeywell of Morristown, New Jersey, USA. International Patent Publication 2011/049819 describes a helmet comprising a ceramic outer shell and an inner backing material of fibre-reinforced composites. According to the patent, the helmet is relatively thin and lightweight.
