A solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) has been produced by placing a microfuel cell directly on a silicon chip, an advance that is said to be able to revolutionize the way people use power. According to SiEnergy System, based in Quincy, Manhattan, USA, these SOFC's address the problems that limit their conventional counterparts exploiting the properties of silicon; they operate at lower temperatures and use normal industrial materials. SiEnergy's SOFCs also produce small amounts of carbon dioxide (carbon footprint).
