The INM - Leibniz Institute for New Materials has developed coatings that it says offer protection from corrosion and wear, while at the same time being aesthetically pleasing - and colourful. To produce the coatings, the INM uses silicates that are converted into a sol-gel nanocomposite in a single-step reaction. Depending on the colour pigment and the substrate, this means that surfaces can be hermetically sealed at 200-800℃.
