Macronutrients are the major food components that produce energy for the body. These major nutrients are carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. These are needed in large amounts by the body.Micronutrients are also necessary for good nutrition and good health. But they do not provide energy. Vitamins and minerals are needed in smaller or "micro" amounts by the body and may come from plant or animal sources.Phytochemicals are bioactive compounds found in plant foods that may provide health benefits. Technically they are not nutrients. Emerging research suggests many phytochemicals can be helpful in maintaining health.
