Postoperative spinal wound infections can be devastating complications. Optimal algorithms for the treatment of spinal wound infections remain controversial. Indications for the retention or removal of instrumentation, wound closure and management, and the need for repeat irrigation and debridement surgeries are poorly defined [2]. Some authors recommend removing instrumentation when a spinal wound is infected [1, 2, 4]. Ho et al. [2] concluded that irrigation and debridement without complete implant removal resulted in a 50% chance of requiring additional surgical intervention to control the infection. Other authors favor preserving spinal implants to preserve stabilization [3, 7].
