Report of the JRAAC on the Situation of the Accreditation Training Programmes in Europe.

The Joint Residency Advisory and Accreditation Committee (JRAAC), a joint committee of the EANS and the Section of Neurosurgery of the UEMS, was founded by both organizations with the task to develop standards and guidelines of a European Training Programme in neurosurgery, and to establish a matching training curriculum in the different European countries.A frame for an accreditation process of Neurosurgical Departments seeking European recognition of their Training Programmes was worked out and gradually refined. Accreditation begins with a formal application from the programme director, describing training programme and teaching environment. There are no strict rules how the programme is organized, but it should satisfy the principal requirements of the European Training in Neurosurgery, described in the European Training Charter [2-4]. The application is reviewed by two JRAAC members and presented to the JRAAC meeting. The meetings are held twice a year in February and in July. Programmes that arefound to be in agreement with the requirements and standards are eligible for the second stage of the accreditation process, the site visit It is conducted by two visitors, experienced chairpersons, nominated by the JRAAC, and a third national visitor appointed by the applicant or the National Neurosurgical Society.
