Accreditation of neurosurgical training programmes in Europe: report of JRAAC.

The Joint Residency Advisory and Accreditation Committee (JRAAC), a joint committee of the EANS and the Section of Neurosurgery of the UEMS, was founded by both organizations with the task of developing standards and guidelines for a European Training Programme in neurosurgery, to establish a matching training curriculum and to try to standardize training in the different European countries A framework for an accreditation process of Neurosurgical Departments seeking European recognition of their Training Programmes has been developed and gradually refined. Accreditation begins with a formal application [1] from the programme director, describing the training programme and teaching environment. There is room for some flexibility in the organization of the programme, but it should satisfy the principal requirements of the European Training in Neurosurgery, described in the European Training Charter [2-4]. The application is reviewed by two JRAAC members and presented to a JRAAC meeting held twice a year. Programmes that are found to be in agreement with the requirements and standards are eligible for the second stage of the accreditation process, the site visit. It is conducted by two visitors, experienced chairpersons, nominated by the JRAAC, and a third national visitor appointed to represent the National Neurosurgical Society.
