Sierra Leone relaunches round as terms eased

Sierra Leone has relaunched its fourth licensing round after relaxing terms and expanding the acreage available to try and entice new investors. Only a decade ago the country was one of the most attractive locations in Africa as operators hoped to extend the West African Transform Margin from Ghana to Sierra Leone and Liberia. However, six wells between 2009 and 2013 by Anadarko, Lukoil and Talisman failed to uncover commercial hydrocarbons. The only other two offshore wells were drilled by Mobil and Amoco in the early 1980s.
