India's underlying new car demand is running out of steam, raising fears that there is little momentum left in a BRIC member that like China was expected to act this year as a growth locomotive by taking up at least some of the slack from other slowing main markets like Europe. However, it is not quite as bad as it looks at first glance, chiefly because the 18.6 per cent plunge in August sales was due at least partly to special factors.
