Cost effective technological advance aimed at reducing increasingly critical vehicle CO_2 emissions, it seems, are the path now followed by virtually all vehicle and component manufacturers in their quest to stay competitive in a rapidly changing market where tougher corporate fuel economy limits have become the norm. As various CO_2 linked vehicle taxes and charges are adding to the intensifying strain on motorists' wallets, consumers' eyes are focussed more than ever on the official fuel-economy of the cars to be bought. Responding to these forever growing undercurrents, the autoindustry is left with no alternative but to dig deeper and deeper in its quest to lower the CO_2 emissions of their cars. Already these trends have made their mark on Europe's car market. Growing numbers of Europe's would-be buyers are switching to diesels in droves, because of a near one-third fuel-saving when compared to a similar petrol-powered car. But that's by no means all.
