Colon targeted delivery of metronidazole, which immediately releases the drug as soon as the drug delivery system reaches the colon was formulated for treatment of Crohn's Disease. To prepare colonic tablets the core tablets of metronidazole were first compression coated with time dependent polymer, PEO/, HPMC, and then with pH dependent polymer, Eudragit~R S100. Swelling study concluded that PEO showed higher swelling capacity compared to HPMC. Metronidazole core tablets compression coated with 250 mg PEO (Polyox~R 1105) and enteric coated with 6% w/w of Eudragit~R S100 showed 100% drug release within 1 h after the delivery system reaches the colon.
