The definition of the functional unit and the issue of milk and meat allocation in LCA is particularly critical in developing countries where farms remain less specialised than in developed countries. The aim of this study was to quantify the relative contribution of milk and meat to human-edible protein, fat, and energy (from fat and protein), referred to herein as human-edible nutrients (HEN) from livestock systems of Costa Rica.
