Merging Local Art Movement in Rattan Industry to Uplift the Social Economic Status Through Academic Knowledge Development in Cirebon, Indonesia

This paper describes research experience in developing rattan’s furniture at Bandung-Cirebon, Indonesia. It was a research trip by a group of Industrial Design researcher from Universiti Teknologi MARA and Universiti Malaysia Kelantan. The research development intended to gaindesign skills and approach as rattan manufacturing development seems to be the most influential activities in Tegalwangi, Cirebon Indonesia. It also explored the main factors that influence sustainability of cultural economy development to the industrial needs. Series of discussion and sitevisiting has been made with Bandung-Cirebon community, starting from the rattan players (labour), local manufacturer, university researcher, government bodies and NGO. Through interviews and academic discussion, statements being mapped using triplex theory analysis to allocate local groupmovement influence to the development of rattan industry in order to accommodate industrial needs. Relationships of the study are discussed.
