An Important Alternative for Food Safe Applications

What is GLYM0 exactly and why does the European Union have this topic on its agenda now? Dr. Monika Toenniessen: GLYMO is an epoxy silane. Its precise name is [3-(2,3-Epoxypropoxy)propyl] trimethoxy silane, CAS No 2530-83-8, Food Contact Material (FCM) substance number 1068. It is an adhesion promoter used in food packaging, i.e. for laminated pouches that must be resistant to sterilization and hot filling (Figure 2). In some cases, it is also used for microwaveable packaging. This adhesion promoter has very favorable attributes, which is why it can be found in a variety of applications {Figure 3). It increases, for example, the adhesion between aluminum and polyole-fin foils and maintains the strength of the bonding even at elevated temperatures. GLYMO is the best-known representative of the epoxy silanes, a group of substances which contain an epoxy three ring as the predominant structure element. Another substance of this group is GLYEO ([3-(2,3-Epoxypropoxy)propyl]triethoxy silane, CAS No 2602-34-8), which is also used as an adhesion promoter.
