Strong, injection-mouldable thermoplastic composite for implantable devices

A radiolucent, 30%-by-weight carbon fibre-reinforced polyetheretherketone (PEEK) has been launched for the manufacture of implantable devices by Solvay of Brussels, Belgium. The company claims that its Zeniva ZA-600 CF30 PEEK demonstrates a modulus very similar to that of cortical bone, which means, unlike implantable metals, it can minimize any reduction in bone density by maintaining stress on the surrounding bone tissue.
