Special Olympics has been transforming the lives of people with intellectual disabilities since 1968. It was founded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, whose sister, Rosemary Kennedy, underwent a lobotomy that rendered her permanently incapacitated. Shriver witnessed firsthand the injustice that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities experienced.
