On 1st January Rio Tinto lifted the force majeure on acid and copper shipments from the Kennecott mine smelter, USA. The force majeure had been in place for 79 days from 13th October following the death of a worker exposed to sulphur dioxide gases, although operations at the smelter had restarted on 17th November. Refined copper production was down by 67% in Q4 2017 relative to Q4 2016.
