Peru’s Minister of Mines has suggested building a railroad from the coast to MMG’s Las Bambas mine,which is over 700km from the nearest port and situated at over 4,000m in the Andes. Theannouncement was prompted after protests by local communities, situated along the haul road,erupted last month, forcing the government to declare a state-of-emergency. MMG reported that themine is on track to meet its production target this year (~440,000t).
