“The harsh treatment that shared escooter and ebike batteries receive is the cause of more than half of life-cycle emissions of the industry,” says Simon Fellin, CEO of Teleport Mobility AB, a Swedish startup whose founding team boasts almost 100 years of experience from the transportation and mobility sector. He adds: “Battery pack production accounts for about one third, or approx 60 kg CO2- eq (median of 118.5 CO2- eq/kWh - ICCT 2018*) of the total production emissions of a shared vehicle. However, since batteries are sensitive to both temperature and impact, they do not last nearly as long as the frame of the shared vehicle.” He adds: “Driving back and forth to central warehouses, often in a diesel truck, to swap batteries, also account for the majority of the operational emissions and almost half of the cost of the mobility operators.” To address this issue, Teleport teamed up with several of the leading companies in the industry in a series of webinar workshops throughout the spring to define a Green, Safe, and Smart battery pack. The battery packs will, after tests and verification have been completed, be made available as an open-source reference design.
