The Kyoto Collection of the Congenital Anomaly Research Center in the Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine has stored around 45 000 specimens despite the difficulty of accumulating more specimens. Thus, one of the best uses of the specimens at present is for nondestructive three-dimensional data acquisition. Three magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and two X-ray computed tomography (XCT) scanners have been used for the data acquisition. Among the three MRI scanners is a 2.34-Tesla super-parallel magnetic resonance microscope (MRM) developed by KK et al., which has been used to scan 1204 specimens. Another is a 7-Tesla MRI scanner (Biospec 70/20 USR, Bruker Biospin MRI Gmbh, Ettlingen, Germany), which has a markedly high spatial resolution. The third is a 3-Tesla MRI scanner for medical use (MAGNETOM Prisma, Siemens Healthcare, Erlangen, Germany), which could scan the largest specimen that measured 225 mm in crown rump length. One of the XCT devices is an absorption XCT (Alexion, Toshiba, Tokyo, Japan), which is best for hard tissues, installed in the Faculty of Science. The other scanner is called phase-contrast XCT, which has an extremely high resolution, and located in the High-Energy Accelerator Research Institute (KEK).
