Tuberous Sclerosis Complex

An 18-year-old woman presented for evaluation and treatment of facial papules that had been increasing; in number and becoming more widespread (Figures 1 and 2). Her classmates had been teasing her because of her appearance. She was accompanied by a legal guardian, because her mother was undergoing inpatient treatment for neuropsychiatric disease. History. The patient had noted a gradual increase in the number of facial lesions over many years but otherwise had been in good health. The facial lesions were not painful but were bothersome because of their appearance. In addition to her mother's history of neuropsychiatric illness, there was a family history of seizure disorder.
