Battery designs foe applications-fit for purpose?

There is almost no sphere of modern life where batteries do not play a part. From toothbrushes, mobile phones, cameras, torches, computers etc., to airport tow tractors, solar installations and UPS arrays, batteries are a standard component in their use. In order to provide energy and power in these diverse applications there are different technologies and even different designs within those technologies to address those requirements. It is fair and rather obvious to say that there is not yet a universal panacea for all energy storage requirements. The different chemistries have diverse operating ranges, output and input characteristics, energy densities and cost of manufacture. Ratherthan take a helicopterview of the different battery systems, this next series of articles will be examining how well the current lead-acid technology is able to satisfy its market sector requirements.
