TUMUT 3 POWER STATION THEN AND NOW

Located in Talbingo, NSW, it was the first pumped storage hydroelectric power station in Australia. Forty-seven years later, the structure is still a very important functioning power station for the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Authority, and the following extract from our 1973 Awards Program outlines why it is still in great condition: The Power Station contains six hydraulic turbine generating units and three pumps, each of the turbines having a generating capacity of 250,00 kW and each of the pumps being able to raise 954 m3 of water per second against a head of 155 m. It has an overall length of 154 m, a width of 22.5 m and a height of 59.6 m and 106,038 m3 of reinforced concrete was used in its construction.
