Effects of different sowing dates on harvesting date and yield of bean under plastic tunnels.

Four pole bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) varieties (Alman Ayse, Ayse Kadyn, Caly and 4F-89) and 7 dwarf bean varieties (Yalova 5, Yalova 17, Borlotto, Biggoldria, Flash, Sprite and Haricot GR17) were studied under Tokat (Turkey) conditions in 1994 and 1995. Both pole bean and dwarf bean seeds were sown in the spring season (15 March, 1 April and 15 April) and autumn season (15 July, 1 August and 15 August). Pole bean seeds were sown in an unheated single-layer, high plastic tunnel while dwarf bean seedswere sown in a single-layer, low plastic tunnel. The first harvesting date and yield in both pole and dwarf bean varieties were significantly affected by year, sowing date and seasons. Differences in yield among varieties were also significant. The interaction between season and sowing date in both pole and dwarf bean varieties, as well as the interaction between season and year in pole bean varieties significantly affected the yield. The highest yields in pole bean varieties were obtained in 1994 (33.82 t/ha), spring season (31 t/ha), first sowing dates (34.44 t/ha) and for Alman Ayse and Caly varieties (32.22 and 32.05 t/ha, respectively). The highest yield of dwarf bean varieties were obtained in 1994 (23.57 t/ha), autumn season (18.14 t/ha), firstsowing dates (23.24 t/ha), and for Yalova 5 and Yalova 17 varieties (20.62 and 20.93 t/ha, respectively).
