The advantages and disadvantages of CAT (0.01 M CaCl2 + 0.002 M DTPA) method for the analysis of horticultural substrates are discussed. The main disadvantage of the CAT method is the overestimation of Mn in the substrate. However, the disadvantagesof the other methods do not occur in the CAT method. The disadvatanges of the other methods include the underestimation of exchangeable cations (K+, NH4+ and Na+), the underestimation of P in substrates with high pH (e.g. compost) and the difficulty ofestimating trace elements within the deficiency range.
