Production of Solanaceae crops under protected cultivation with focus on GATT and agriculture sustainability

摘要

This paper discusses protected cultivation of the Solanaceae worldwide, with the emphasis on the major constraints relating to consumer-driven changes and the recent tendency for liberalization in world trade, as exemplified by the GATT agreement. The need for sustainability in protected cultivation of Solanaceae is highlighted with respect to plant breeding and biotechnology, integrated crop protection and integrated pest management, soil solarization, the greenhouse environment, plastics and pollution, and the sustainability of agricultural practices.
