Evaluation of tomato commercial cultivars and lines for fresh market and processing use.

Yield and other horticultural characteristics of 16 fresh market and 16 processing cultivars of tomato were evaluated during 1995 and 1996 in Karaj, Iran. The seeds were sown in an unheated glasshouse in pots on 10 March 1995 and 13 March 1996. Theanalysis of variance showed that there were significant differences in yields both for the fresh market and for processing cultivars. For the fresh market cultivars, Hicross Hybrid consistently had the highest yield with an average of 98.2 t/ha followedby SP-100 (91.5 t/ha), Floradade (89 t/ha), and Hybrid Petoearly (87 t/ha). For the processing cultivars, LIHB 232 had the highest mean yield of 94.1 t/ha followed by LIHC 020 (89.8 t/ha), SP-178 (85.21 t/ha) and SP-96 (83.9 t/ha). Tabulated data are presented comparing the horticultural characteristics (mean fruit weight, growth habit, foliage colour immature fruit colour, fruit shape and size, cracking, earliness and fruit firmness) of fresh market and processing tomato cultivars.
