To investigate the possibility of regulating flowering time for breeding and for forcing culture in Japan, the effects of seed vernalization on flowering and pod setting of 7 Japanese faba bean cultivars (Umami-nagasaya, Joyo-nagasaya Wase-soramame,Sanuki-issun, Sanuki-nagasaya, Midori-issun and Shimizu-issun) were investigated. Germinated seeds were held in the dark at a low temperature for 1 month (SV plot), and sown on 2 November 1996 and 17 November 1997. Control seeds were soaked in water for24 h to speed germination before sowing. The plants were grown in a glasshouse and a plastic house in 1996, and solely in a plastic house in 1997. Dates of budding, flowering and pod setting were advanced (compared with controls) by low temperature treatment of the germinated seeds, especially in the case of Wase-soramame. In 1996, numbers of nodes forming from the cotyledon to the pod stage in the control and SV plots were 12-23 and 7-14, respectively. No significant differences between treatments for were observed for pod weight, seed number per pod and seed weight. In 1997, the mean numbers of nodes from cotyledonto flowering and pod formation in the control plots were 9-11 and 11-14, but those in SV plot were 7-8 and 7-10, respectively. Pod number per plant, seed number per pod and seed fresh weight tended to be higher in SV than in control plots.
