THROUGHOUT THE 1950s, Convair pretty much cornered the market in beautiful delta-winged designs. After a somewhat rocky start and significant redesign to conform to area rule theory, the F-102 Delta Dagger eventually made it in to squadron service in significant numbers, being deployed with fighter squadrons at home, in Europe and the Far East. More importantly, it provided the basis for the so-called 'ultimate interceptor' - the F-106 Delta Dart. This was a heck of a good-looking airplane and without doubt the most elegant of all the celebrated 'Century Series' fighters.
