Seeds of indeterminate tomato cultivars Vivia Fy and Zeynep Fy were sown in 4 unheated tunnel types (double-layer high plastic tunnel (DLHPT), single-layer high plastic tunnel (SLHPT), perforated, single-layer low plastic tunnel (PSLLPT) and mini plastic tunnel (MPT)) on 4 sowing dates (1 February, 15 February, 1 March and 15 March 1993) in Tokat province (Turkey). Seedlings were lifted and transplanted in an unheated single-layer, high plastic tunnel on various dates. Earliness of Vivia Fy and Zeynep Fy was not increased by sowing date or tunnel type. Zeynep Fy was observed to mature earlier than Vivia FY (70.81 vs. 74.92 days to maturity). Total yields were higher in DLHPT (308.67 t/ha) than in SLHPT (293.19 t/ha), PSLLPT (274.32 t/ha) and MPT (282.35 t/ha). Sowing date did not improve early yield and total yield, but these were significantly increased by DLHPT. Distribution of total yield in June, July, August and September was significantly affected by tunnel type and cultivar. It is concluded that the most suitable tunnel type for seedling growth is DLHPT, a sowing date between 1 February and 15 March is best, and the most suitable cultivar is Vivia Fy in Tokat province.
