Genetically male sterile, dual purpose line 8901A was used as the female parent in test crosses with inbred male parent lines. The hybrids were selfed and sib-crossed. The offspring were analysed for fertility segregation. A male sterile line was selected from a cross between 8901A and distant hybrid 735-8-1-1. The male sterile plants had 100% sterility, normal nectar glands and heading, and high combining ability. Segregation analysis showed that male sterility was controlled by the interaction of2 pairs of genes with dominance effects.
