Pharmacognostical studies on the roots of Piper nigrum L. III: Determination of essential oil and piperine

A total yield of 0.39% essential oil was obtained from dried root (purchased in Hainan, China) by distillation. Contents of trans- and cis-caryophyllene, delta-3-canene [delta-3-carene], humulene, limonene and beta-pinene in the oil were 51.2, 6.76,6.00, 3.76, 2.97 and 1.35%, respectively. The piperine content of the roots was determined as 0.79% by RP-HPLC. The piperine content of different root samples was: 0.99% in the thin roots (0.5 cm in diameter), 0.14% in the thick root (3 cm in diameter),and 0.44% in the cortex and 0.29% in the stele of a root 2 cm in diameter.
