Performance of four tomato hybrids cultivated in the open air and under polyethylene minitunnel

The production of 4 hybrid tomatoes (Merav, T-9301, Guay and Elviro) grown in the open or under plastic minitunnels (75 cm high by 80 cm wide) until flowering, at which time the plastic was removed, was studied. Higher total yields were achieved with the minitunnels (average of 98.81 compared with 85.19 t/ha from plants grown in the open) and fruits were larger. There were cultivar X cultivation method interactions which indicated that Guay and Elviro are suitable for minitunnel production while Merav and T-9301 would be suitable for either cultivation method.
