In greenhouse experiments in 1993-94, rose cultivars Ilseta (own-rooted) and Jaguar (grafted on Rosa indica [R. chinensis]) were grown on volcanic cinder (picon) of 3 particle size ranges and irrigated at 3 different frequencies. In an experiment from March to July plants were irrigated 5, 8 or 11 times. In another experiment from August to December the most frequent irrigation treatment was replaced by one based on a radiation schedule. Data were collected on water consumption and drainage, numberof flowers produced, stem length, fresh weight and malformed and unsaleable flowers. In cv. Jaguar, more frequent irrigation increased flower yield in the second experiment. Irrigation frequency had no significant effect on flower yield, fresh weight orstem length in Ilseta. The particle size range of the cinder had little effect. Flower yields of Jaguar grown on rockwool were comparable with those on volcanic cinder and much higher than those on soil.
