In the area of powder coatings, UV-cured systems play a significant role, explains Michael F. Knoblauch, president at Key-land Polymer Material Sciences. How do powder coatings contribute to more environmentally friendly solutions? Powder coatings are 100% solid materials — solvent- and water-free - no VOCs or HAPs. They do not contain any chemicals that pose a health or safety risk to applicators or end users. They do not require hazardous-use permits or necessitate environmental air-quality reporting requirements to manufacture or apply. Powder coatings' application-transfer effi- ciency can reach 95%, and waste powder can be repurposed, keeping it out of a waste stream. UV-cured powder coatings have a smaller energy footprint than ther-moset powder coating, needing significantly less time and energy to melt and flow and cure instantly.
