Performance of micropropagated strawberry plantlets after planting in the field.

The aim of these studies was to evaluate under field conditions the suitability of micropropagated strawberry plantlets both for reproduction and fruiting. Studies contained three cycles, each started one year apart and consisting of three (first two cycles) or two (third cycle) experiments, in which plantlets of four strawberry cultivars were used. The plantlets were: D -- obtained directly from micropropagation; D1 -- runner plants of D plantlets; D2 -- runner plants of D1 plantlets; and standardSt plantlets from a certified nursery. Plantlets from micropropagation usually showed a higher rate of reproduction than St plantlets; this character disappeared after their reproducing by runners. The reproduction rate varied by cultivar in all cycles.The effect of micropropagation on fruit yield and quality was usually smaller than on reproduction rate and was limited mainly to plantlets coming directly from micropropagation; their total yield was higher than that of St plantlets only in one cycle,but average fruit size was usually smaller.
