Ecophysiological responses of Chardonnay and Sauvignon in different soil managements

A vineyard in Tuscany was submitted to 4 soil management regimes: chemical weed control, mechanical clean tillage, natural vegetation (grass) cover or grass cover crops (Festuca arundinacea and Lolium perenne). Leaf temperature measurements were performed with a hand held infrared thermometer (thermic range 8-14 mm) during several sunny days for 3 years (1991-93). The cultivars used were Chardonnay and Sauvignon grafted on K5BB rootstock. Yield and quality (must analysis) parameters were recorded.Temperature differentials (leaf temperature - air temperature) were lowest in the chemical weed control plot. The potential use of leaf temperature as a tool for evaluating soil management systems and in the definition of the characteristics of culturalzones is discussed.
