Effects of preplanting P fertilization in sour cherry orchards

In field trials at Lyczyn and Wilanow with the sour cherry cultivars North Star and Schattenmorelle grafted on either Prunus mahaleb or mazzard sweet cherry rootstocks, preplant application of superphosphate produced small but significant increasesin available soil P. P recovery, 4-6 years after treatment, was 11-18%. Recovery was higher from light, sandy loam soil (Lyczyn), which was slightly acidic, than from heavier loam soil (Wilanow), which was close to neutral pH. Application of P fertilizerdid not increase leaf P significantly and had no effect on tree growth and yield. It was concluded that there was no response to P fertilizer when the surface soil contained >20 mug available P/g. Addition of NKMg fertilizer significantly increased treegrowth and yield. Schattenmorelle performed better than North Star on P. mahaleb. Yield of Schattenmorelle was higher on mazzard than on P. mahaleb.
