Preliminary results on the production value of new scab-resistant apple cultivars bred at the Research Institute of Pomology and Floriculture (RIPF), Skierniewice, Poland.

The production value of four scab-resistant apple cultivars selected at the Research Institute of Pomology and Floriculture: 'Early Freegold', Free Redstar', 'Melfree', and J 79 on M.9 rootstock were compared to 'Freedom' and 'Florina' - two scab resistant standard cultivars. The productivity, healthiness and fruit quality were assessed in 2000-2002. During 3 seasons of investigation in the field, the cultivars did not show any symptoms of apple scab and powdery mildew. Preliminary results indicate a high overall value for 'Melfree', followed by 'Free Redstar'. Their fruits are large, nicely coloured and of a good internal quality, and trees are only slightly susceptible to powdery mildew.
