Plum trees of Prunus domestica cv. Dabrowicka Prune, grafted on seedlings and the semidwarf rootstock, Wangenheim Prune, were planted in the spring of 1994 [place not given] at 3.5 m spacing between rows and at a range of spacing within the row (1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0 m; equivalent to 2857, 1904, 1428, 1142, and 952 trees per hectare, respectively) and trained as spindle or hedgerow systems. Dense planting suppressed growth of trees and decreased yield per tree but greatly increased yield per hectare. Trees trained as a spindle produced higher yield than trees trained as a hedgerow system. In the fifth year after planting (1998), yield per hectare varied from 30 to 44 t for hedgerow trees and from 41 to 66 t for spindle trees. The highest yields were obtained from the most densely planted plots. Planting density and training system had only a small influence on fruit quality.
