Plant physiological and production practices under controlled environment greenhouse systems.

摘要

Regardless of where protected cultivation structure occurs, the challenge is to develop a greenhouse product whose value in terms of yield, quality or consistency can justify the added cost of production in controlled environments and to select crops with greater stress tolerance. In all these research areas, the plant physiologist has much to contribute and also much to learn. Where can plant physiologists make the most contributions to controlled environment agriculture? Looking at research currently going on around the world, the following represent some of the most promising research directions: (1) improving fruit quality in terms of uniformity, appearance, taste and nutrition; (2) increasing energy and water use efficiency; (3) improving the sustainability of controlled environment agriculture; (4) increasing plant tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses; (5) designing protected cultivation systems that are competitive globally and/or address local needs. Advances and current research in these areas is briefly reviewed..
