Effect of pruning severity and branch quality on fruit set and fruit dry weight of 'Packham's Triumph' pears (Pyrus communis L.).

The effects of dormant pruning and branch quality (short or long; thick or thin) of 2-year-old bearing units (BU) on the fruit set and mean fruit dry weight of pear cv. Packham's Triumph was determined during the 2002/03 season in Western Cape, South Africa. The short BU (28 cm long) had higher fruit set (20% higher) and mean fruit dry weight (20% higher) than the long BUs (56 cm). On thick BU (14 mm basal diameter), 70% higher fruit set and 20% higher mean fruit dry weight were recorded than on thin BU (8 mm)..
