Valda May McRae was born on 22 April 1935 and died on 3 January 2014. After completing a DipEd in 1956, Valda taught at McLeod and Numurkah High Schools before returning to the School of Chemistry, University of Melbourne, in 1960 to complete her PhD as a part-time student while working as a demonstrator and later senior demonstrator.
