One-year-old shoots of both cultivars were taken during Nov.-Mar. 1990-91 and 1991-92, and subjected to -20℃ for 4, 8, 16 and 24 h at a freezing rate of 5deg /h. The shoots were then transferred to 20deg and bud survival recorded. Frost resistance was highest during Jan. and Feb., and lowest in Nov. and Mar. Salak was the more resistant cultivar. Bud total sugars and sucrose contents increased gradually in both cultivars until Jan and Feb., and then declined in Mar. Starch content was high in Nov. andMar. but low in mid-winter. There was a positive correlation between total sugars and sucrose contents, but a negative correlation between starch and total sugars contents. Frost resistance was positively correlated with sucrose content but negatively correlated with starch content in Salak in both years.
